Pomme’s songs feel like air. There are voices you hear. And there are voices you breathe. Pomme belongs to the second kind. Her songs arrive quietly and change the atmosphere around you. You slow down without meaning to. You listen longer. The edges of the world soften. Nothing asks for your attention, space simply opens. Her music accompanies moments when light shifts, when days shorten, when you want to stay with a feeling rather than move past it. Some of her work invites you to do exactly that: to remain inside a mood, a temperature, a stretch of time, song after song.

In this piece, I’m sharing a few of my favorite songs to begin with, each paired with a live performance I love, and a favorite passage translated. Then we’ll drift further, into duets, a special winter movie, and into who Pomme is.

Written for Arcane, this song became a massive success, breaking streaming records and bringing together two of the strongest voices in contemporary French music and another big favorite of mine, Stromae.

“Everything Matters” (with AURORA)

This duet feels like a meeting of two kindred spirits. I know, I deviate here, it is not a French song, but I couldn’t help myself. Pomme’s voice blends seamlessly with AURORA’s, both airy, both fragile, both otherworldly. Hope you’ll enjoy as much as I do!

Les Saisons

This is my favorite Pomme album.

Les Saisons follows cycles rather than narratives, time passing, light changing, nature unfolding. I especially love its autumn and winter moods, and for this piece, I’m sharing the winter “movie” she created, gathering three songs into one continuous atmosphere. Let it play without interruption. Pomme’s real name is Claire Pommet. She was born on August 2, 1996, in Décines-Charpieu, near Lyon, in eastern France. Music entered her life early. She grew up surrounded by it, learning classical instruments, singing, and writing from a young age, long before she imagined a public career.

Her first album, À peu près, was released in 2017. It introduced her voice and writing style quietly, without spectacle. Two years later, Les failles cachées confirmed her place in the French music landscape. The album resonated widely, carried by songs that spoke openly about fear, love, and vulnerability, and it marked a turning point in her public recognition.

With Consolation, released in 2022, Pomme deepened her work even further. The album feels more expansive while remaining intimate, exploring grief, tenderness, and resilience with the same restraint that defines her voice. Throughout her discography, she has also released shorter projects and collaborations, always maintaining a clear artistic line.

Pomme’s work has been widely recognized by the French music industry. She has received several Victoires de la Musique, among the most prestigious music awards in France, including major prizes for her albums and for her work as a female artist. These acknowledgments came without changing her approach: she remained faithful to quiet arrangements, careful writing, and a voice that never seeks to dominate.

Today, Pomme occupies a singular place in contemporary French music. She is widely respected, often imitated, but never quite comparable.

She has never tried to be louder than she is.
And that, perhaps, is what makes her so clearly heard.

To understand Aznavour, you have to begin with his name.
Born Shahnour Vaghinag Aznavourian in Paris in 1924 to Armenian parents who had fled the genocide, he carried two worlds within him, the exile and the Parisian, the survivor and the dreamer.

From early on, he lived for the stage. As a boy, he and his sister Aïda performed in small Paris cafés, long before anyone could imagine he’d one day fill the world’s greatest theaters, from the Olympia to Carnegie Hall.

But the road there was long. Critics mocked his voice, his height, his looks. Yet it was precisely his fragility that made him unforgettable.

Édith Piaf saw it before anyone else. She took him under her wing, bringing him on tour, encouraging him to write, and teaching him how to own the stage.

He was also close to another géant de la chanson: Charles Trenet, the man he called “a poet who taught the French to dream in song.” The two men shared not only a first name but a profound friendship.
As Aznavour once said of him:

« On lui doit tout. Il a inventé la chanson poético-populaire. Ce qui fait que la poésie est entrée dans l’oreille de ceux qui, habituellement, ne se préoccupaient pas de poésie. Il faut lire La Fontaine et il faut lire Trenet. C’est un poète, Trenet. Il faut le lire. Il faut le chanter et le lire en même temps. »

Every year, the two men celebrated their birthdays together, two giants of la chanson française, united by humor, affection, and the simple joy of words set to melody.

Little-known facts & anecdotes:

• Aznavour wrote over 1,200 songs, in nine languages, including English, Italian, Spanish, German, and Armenian.

• His lyrics often touched taboo themes for the time: aging (Comme ils disent), regret (Hier encore), or broken dreams (La Bohème).

• He was also a brilliant actor, appearing in over 60 films, François Truffaut called him “a born storyteller, even in silence.”

• In 1988, after the Armenian earthquake, he founded Aznavour for Armenia, mobilizing international aid and recording the charity single Pour toi Arménie.

• He was named UNESCO’s Ambassador for Armenia, and even after turning 90, he continued to perform on stage, saying, “I will stop singing when I lose my voice, not when I lose my age.”

• On his piano, he kept a note that read: “Ne t’arrête jamais.” Never stop.

He never did.

Paul Van Haver, better known as Stromae, is a Belgian singer, songwriter, and producer whose work has redefined the boundaries of French-language pop. Born in Brussels to a Rwandan father and Belgian mother, he draws on a wide palette of influences, from hip-hop and house to chanson and Congolese rumba, and fuses them into something uniquely his own.

His stage name itself is a nod to his love of wordplay: Stromae is an inversion of maestro in verlan, French backslang. That same playful mastery of language infuses his lyrics, where puns, double meanings, and unexpected images reveal layers of emotion.
Like Jacques Brel before him, Stromae delivers his songs with theatrical precision, his body and voice becoming extensions of the story he tells. But his themes are resolutely modern: absent fathers, terminal illness, mental health, the quiet erosion of relationships, and the emptiness behind consumer culture. He doesn’t shy away from uncomfortable truths, instead, he dresses them in irresistible rhythms, so that listeners dance even as they reflect.

In the end, Stromae is more than a musician. He’s a chronicler of our times, an artist who turns the raw material of human experience into finely crafted poetry. His songs are mirrors, sometimes flattering, sometimes merciless, held up to ourselves.

La Marseillaise

On the occasion of July 14th, let’s revisit the song that shook the world, not with a love story, but with a call to arms. La Marseillaise is not just a national anthem. It's a revolution set to music, fierce, raw, and utterly unforgettable.

Written in a single night in 1792 by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle, this anthem began as a war song for the French army fighting Austria and Prussia. It became the heartbeat of the Revolution, shouted by volunteers marching from Marseille to Paris, which is how it earned its name.

It’s a song of fire: blood in the fields, courage in the heart, and freedom on the lips. And though it's stirred controversy for its violent imagery, its emotional charge remains unmatched. It’s defiance in musical form.

July 14: The Fire That Sparked a Nation

Long before it became fireworks and feasts, July 14 was a day of rupture, a moment when the people of Paris broke open not just the gates of a fortress, but the very idea of monarchy itself.

It was 1789, and France was on the edge. Bread was scarce, debt was high, and faith in the king was collapsing. On the morning of July 14, a crowd of Parisians marched toward a symbol of royal tyranny: the Bastille. Though it held only seven prisoners, the fortress loomed large in the public imagination, a shadowy emblem of arbitrary power and repression.

By nightfall, the Bastille had fallen. The revolution had found its image.

The storming of the Bastille did more than bring down a prison. It electrified the nation. Across France, people seized local power, tore down symbols of absolutism, and began imagining a different future. The Revolution had begun.

A year later, on July 14, 1790, the Fête de la Fédération celebrated the unity of a newly born nation with a massive gathering on the Champ de Mars, a hopeful, peaceful counterpoint to the violence of the previous summer.

But it wasn’t until 1880, nearly a century later, that July 14 was officially declared France’s national day. The Republic chose to commemorate not just the fall of the Bastille, but the spirit it unleashed: liberté, egalité, fraternité.

Today, July 14 is marked by fireworks over the Eiffel Tower, military parades on the Champs-Élysées, and festive gatherings across the country. Yet beneath the celebration lies something deeper, a reminder that the people, not kings, are the true authors of history.

It is a day of memory, of revolution, of song.

To understand why this anthem still moves millions, we need to return to the day that gave it meaning…

The Story Behind La Marseillaise

In the spring of 1792, France stood on the brink of war. Revolutionary fervor had shaken the old world, and now France prepared to defend itself against enemies from within and beyond its borders. It was in this fevered moment, one stormy April night in Strasbourg, that a young army officer, Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle, sat down and wrote a song that would echo through the centuries.

He called it Chant de guerre pour l’Armée du Rhin, the war song for the army of the Rhine, a rousing call to arms meant to stir patriotism in the hearts of citizen-soldiers. But its destiny would go far beyond the military. When volunteer troops from Marseille marched to Paris singing it later that year, the capital was electrified. The song, fierce and raw, came to be known simply as La Marseillaise.

By 1795, it was officially declared the anthem of the French Republic, a musical embodiment of revolution, unity, and resistance. But like the Republic itself, the anthem's path was anything but steady. As power shifted hands, to Napoleon, then to the restored monarchy, La Marseillaise was silenced, banned, buried. It became too dangerous, too incendiary, too Republican.

Still, it never truly disappeared. The 1830 July Revolution brought it roaring back, and in 1879, La Marseillaise was reinstated once and for all as the national anthem of France, this time by a Third Republic determined to hold onto its ideals.

During World War II, the song took on new life once again. Whispered by the Resistance, hummed in secret meetings, it became a symbol not just of a nation, but of liberty itself. A cry of defiance under occupation, a reminder of what France had once stood for, and would again.

Its composer, ironically, never intended to become a revolutionary icon. Rouget de Lisle was a royalist at heart, uneasy with the radical turn of the Revolution. He died in obscurity, only to be reburied with honors at the Invalides decades later, a reluctant patriot immortalized by the very movement he never fully embraced.

And while the full anthem contains seven fiery verses, most French citizens today only sing the first. Yet even that one verse is enough to stir hearts, a legacy of blood, resistance, and the enduring power of song.

After exploring the music of French and Italian and through poetry in: “Between Two Fires: The Music of French & Italian Poetry”, we return with a new lens, song. This time, we look at how French and Italian intertwine in “Vivo per lei / Je vis pour elle,” a bilingual duet that lets the two languages sing together, literally.

"Vivo per lei / Je vis pour elle" is more than a bilingual love song. It is a lyrical bridge between Italian and French, two languages long associated with romance, poetry, and music. When Andrea Bocelli and Hélène Ségara trade verses, they aren’t just singing in different tongues; they’re showing how two languages can mirror and enrich each other, like harmony and melody in a well-composed song.

Both languages trace their lineage to Latin, evolved through centuries of art, religion, conquest, and literature. And both have become synonymous with passion and elegance, whether in opera or chanson, cinema or literature.

This piece celebrates that closeness, with Vivo per lei as the perfect example: a song where the languages alternate, respond, overlap, and ultimately, dance.

It’s also our way of celebrating La Fête de la Musique (June 21), a cultural tradition that began in France and later took root in Italy and 120 other countries around the world, turning cities into open-air concert halls on the summer solstice. A fitting time to explore how music and language intertwine.

Lyrics & Translation – A Song in Harmony

This bilingual version of Vivo per lei alternates between Italian and French, not as strict translations, but as emotional counterparts.

Shared Roots – Latin Echoes and Etymology

French and Italian are sisters born of Latin, and their shared vocabulary reflects this common ancestry. Let’s explore a few poetic and emotional words that appear in the song (or relate closely to its themes), tracing their roots:

Musica:

this word comes from the Greek μουσική τέχνη, art of the Muses. The Muses were nine sisters, daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, the personification of memory, in turn daughter of the Earth and the Sky (Gea and Uranos). The Muses inspired dance, singing, and all the different genres of poetry, including comedy, tragedy, and epic poems, but also astronomy and geometry. It's fascinating that the arts are seen as daughters of memory: as if through art we could turn our memories into something new, into creation. It is also noteworthy that music was the “art of the Muses” par excellence, above any other; this gives us an idea of how central music was in ancient Greek culture. It was common for poets and aoidos to start their poems by invoking the Muse for inspiration and protection (an element that recurs even in modern epic poems like Divina Commedia, Orlando Furioso, Paradise Lost)

Amore:

this comes from the Latin amor. It is worth noticing that ancient Greeks had no single word for “love”, as they distinguished between passional love, friendship, intellectual love, and so on. “Amor” comes from a mysterious Indo-European root with the original meaning of “to hold, to grasp”, in fact the same root can be found in words from other languages like “to swear” in Greek (“to swear an oath” = “to take a position”) or “power, force” in the Iranian language of Zoroastrim (avesta language). In Latin, instead, it developed toward the idea of “to take by the hand” and therefore “friendship” and “love.”

Anima:

it comes from the Latin “anima”, in turn from the Greek ἄνεμος, “wind” or “blow”, vital breath. Interestingly, the word wasn’t used with figurative meaning but rather to refer to a whiff; to refer to the soul, the Greeks used the word ψυχή, from which our “psyche” derives.

Voce:

from the Latin vox, meaning “voice,” it shares the same root as the Latin verb vocare, meaning “to call.” However, the verb for “to call” evolved differently in modern Romance languages. In Italian, chiamare comes from the Medieval Latin clamare, meaning “to shout.” In French, appeler derives from the Latin appellare, from ad + pello, meaning “to draw toward, to address someone.” Still, the root vocare survives in both languages in more formal or abstract verbs such as evocare / évoquer and invocare / invoquer (evoke, invoke)."

These words are not just linguistic relics. They carry forward centuries of shared imagination, from Roman prayers to Renaissance poetry to modern lyrics.

Shared Musical Traditions: France & Italy, Two Cultures in Harmony

While Vivo per lei / Je vis pour elle brings French and Italian together in lyrical unity, the bond between these two countries goes far beyond language, it sings. Both France and Italy boast musical traditions that are as expressive and emotionally resonant as their words. From opera houses to city squares, from poetic ballads to global pop hits, their musical heritages reflect centuries of shared European creativity, often running in parallel or inspiring one another. Here’s a look at how each country has contributed to the world’s soundscape.

Italian Music: From Opera to Sanremo

Italian music has a rich and influential heritage that continues to shape global musical culture. Italy is famously the birthplace of opera, with composers such as Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini. The tradition of "la lirica" is deeply rooted in Italian culture, as evident in the fascination with historical and famous theatres like La Scala in Milan and Teatro La Fenice in Venice. But Italian music is also embodied by a variety of regional musical styles, each with its own personality, from Neapolitan songs (canzone napoletana) to Sicilian folk music.

In modern times, Italian music has embraced a wide array of modern genres, from the poetic introspection of singer-songwriters like Fabrizio De André and Lucio Dalla to the energetic performances of rock icons such as Vasco Rossi and Ligabue. However, Italian rock often preserves a strong melodic sensibility, staying true to the country’s lyrical tradition. Female artists such as Laura Pausini, Elisa, and Giorgia have also played a key role in shaping Italian pop and soul, combining vocal power with emotional depth. In recent years, several Italian musicians have begun performing in English to reach wider audiences, most notably Måneskin, with their efforts resulting in a large international success.

The most important modern celebration of Italian pop music is the Sanremo Music Festival, founded in 1951 and held yearly. Some evergreen hits like “Volare” by Domenico Modugno or “Con te partirò” by Bocelli were first presented in the framework of this competition. The background of the competition is the marvelous landscape of Sanremo, a 50,000-inhabitant town in Liguria, also known as “Città dei fiori” (“City of Flowers”) due to its active floricultural industry. The songs are judged by various juries and the audience via televoting, with the winner earning the chance to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest.

French Music: Elegance, Emotion, and Innovation

France’s musical tradition mirrors the nuance and charm of its language, expressive, poetic, and richly layered. In classical music, France gave the world iconic composers like Claude Debussy and Erik Satie, who broke conventions with their dreamlike harmonies and minimalist beauty. In the 20th century, France became synonymous with chanson française, a lyrical genre blending melody with deep storytelling. Voices like Édith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour, and Georges Brassens became national treasures, known for their ability to turn personal longing and political reflection into song.

France also made major strides in electronic music, led by innovators such as Jean-Michel Jarre and globally acclaimed acts like Daft Punk. Its urban centers, Paris, Marseille, Lyon, continue to nurture diverse genres like rap, pop, and world music, often shaped by France’s multicultural roots.

One of France’s most cherished contributions to global musical culture is the Fête de la Musique, launched in 1982 by Minister of Culture Jack Lang. Held every June 21st, it invites both amateur and professional musicians to perform in streets, courtyards, and cafés,transforming the entire country into a live concert to celebrate the summer solstice. This idea has since inspired over 120 countries to create similar events, including Italy’s own Festa della Musica.

France also celebrates modern talent through the Victoires de la Musique, its national music awards, spotlighting artists from chanson to electro. Whether it’s the grandeur of the Opéra Garnier, the soul of Montmartre cafés, or the pulse of the French Touch, music in France is not just art, it's cultural identity in motion.

Final Thoughts – Music, Memory, and Lingua d’Amore

"Io vivo per lei / Je vis pour elle", in both Italian and French, it means: “I live for her.” In this song, “her” is music but it could also be language itself, or love, or both.

This duet doesn’t just showcase a shared heritage, it embodies it. Every phrase, every echo, every slight difference in expression shows how French and Italian are not rivals, but reflections. Two languages of love. Two voices in harmony.

To learn one is to step toward the other. To hear both is to feel how language itself can be music, breath, emotion, and soul made sound.

Rencontrez l'Artiste : Édith Piaf (1915–1963)

Do I really have to introduce her? No, you can be French, American, Italian, Indian or English...you know who is Édith Piaf. She stood just under five feet tall, a frail figure in a black dress with clenched hands and a tiny gold cross. But when she sang, she was ten feet tall. Édith Piaf wasn’t just a voice; she was a force of nature. France’s eternal sparrow, she poured her soul into every note.

A battered childhood, a celestial voice

Born Édith Giovanna Gassion in 1915 during the chaos of World War I, Piaf came into the world already surrounded by hardship. Her mother, a struggling singer, left her. Her father, a street acrobat, took little interest. She was passed between grandmothers, one of whom ran a brothel, and nearly went blind from neglect. According to legend, she regained her sight after a pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.

By the time she was a teenager, she was singing on Parisian street corners beside her father. Despite her tiny frame and sickly appearance, her voice stopped people in their tracks: raw, haunting, completely unforgettable.

From "La Môme Piaf" to a national treasure

In 1935, nightclub owner Louis Leplée discovered her and gave her the nickname La Môme Piaf, Paris slang for “the little sparrow.” The name stuck, and the legend began. Her first record, Les mômes de la cloche, came out in 1936 and was an instant hit.

But tragedy always shadowed Piaf. Leplée was murdered the following year, and Piaf was caught in the scandal. She fought her way back with the help of writers like Raymond Asso and the avant-garde genius Jean Cocteau, who saw her not just as a singer but as a born actress of emotion.

A life written in the ink of love and grief

So many of Piaf’s most famous songs are not just performances, they’re confessions. La Vie en rose, which she wrote herself, was born out of her love for singer Yves Montand. Hymne à l’amour was written in grief after her lover, the boxer Marcel Cerdan, died in a plane crash. She never recovered from the loss.

She wasn’t just a performer, she was a mentor and a star-maker. She championed artists like Les Compagnons de la Chanson, Charles Aznavour, and Georges Moustaki, shaping the course of chanson française far beyond her own recordings.

Pain, passion, and the stage as salvation

In the 1950s, Piaf suffered several car accidents and began taking painkillers heavily, which led to a long and painful addiction. Still, she worked relentlessly, recording and performing despite failing health. Her passion for the stage never dimmed.

In 1960, she performed Non, je ne regrette rien (“No, I regret nothing”), a thunderous anthem of defiance written for her by Charles Dumont. It became her signature song and saved the legendary Olympia concert hall from financial ruin.

She passed away in 1963, at just 47 years old. Her dear friend Jean Cocteau died the same day, saying, “Ah, this is the end of an era. Piaf is dead.”

• Piaf was just 1.47m (4'8") tall, but her voice filled opera houses around the world.

With être
The past participle agrees in gender and number with the subject:

Rule:

Meaning: “must have done [something]”

Examples from and beyond the song:

• Elle a dû faire toutes les guerres. → She must have fought all the wars.

• Il a dû partir tôt. → He must have left early.

• Tu as dû oublier. → You must have forgotten.

It’s often confused with obligation (il doit partir → he must leave), but this past form is about guessing, not commanding.

2. Infinitive constructions after modal verbs and prepositions

→ Je dois juste m’asseoir
→ Je ne dois rien vouloir
→ De les retenir

French uses infinitive verbs in many cases where English might expect “to + verb.” This is especially common after:

A la rencontre de l'Artiste

Daniel Balavoine was born in 1952 in Alençon and rose to fame in the 1970s, becoming one of the most iconic and emotionally resonant voices of the French pop-rock scene. He started off modestly in various bands and as a backing vocalist, but his turning point came in 1978 with his breakthrough role as Johnny Rockfort in the legendary rock opera Starmania, written by Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon. That show wasn't just a success, it was a cultural revolution (read more about it in this great piece on Finding Home Elsewhere). And Balavoine, with his electric stage presence and uniquely emotional voice, was at the heart of it.

From there, his solo career skyrocketed. He released hit after hit, combining synth-pop energy with lyrics that were anything but superficial. Balavoine sang about love, injustice, racism, fatherhood, war, and disillusionment—with the same intensity, whether he was whispering or wailing. Tracks like “L’Aziza”, a powerful tribute to his wife and a stance against racism, “Mon fils ma bataille”, about a father’s emotional struggle in a custody fight, or “Le Chanteur”, a poignant self-portrait of the costs of fame, showcase his lyrical courage and social awareness.

He was not just a singer, but a citizen, outspoken, bold, and committed. His activism went beyond words: he used his platform to speak up for the voiceless, challenging political leaders on television, and taking part in humanitarian efforts in Africa. He tragically died in 1986 in a helicopter crash while on a mission during the Paris-Dakar rally to help install water pumps in Mali. He was only 33, but he had already left behind a legacy that few artists can match.

His music lives on, urgent, tender, and still ahead of its time.

The Story Behind La Quête – Jacques Brel

Originally adapted from the English musical Man of La Mancha, La Quête became something more in Brel’s hands. It wasn’t just the voice of Don Quixote, it was the voice of anyone who has dared to live with intensity and vision.
Brel himself directed and starred in the French adaptation in 1968, and his version remains unmatched in emotional resonance.

“La Quête” is about striving for ideals bigger than ourselves, knowing we may fail, knowing it may cost everything, and choosing to try anyway. It’s about dignity, love, and purpose in the face of despair.

He is one of the french-speaking singer I adore the most, and some of his songs are among my all time favourites. They explore themes of love, aging, disillusionment, death, and dreams, always with soul-stirring lyricism and emotional honesty.
Even decades later, his work remains essential to the French musical and poetic landscape.

L’histoire derrière la chanson

Charles Aznavour wrote Mourir d’aimer (“To Die of Loving”) in 1971, inspired by the tragic real-life story of Gabrielle Russier, a French teacher who, in the late 1960s, was prosecuted for having a love affair with one of her students, a relationship both controversial and deeply scrutinized by society and the media.

Despite the emotional depth of their connection, Gabrielle was condemned by the legal system, suspended from teaching, and ultimately driven to take her own life. Her story caused a national stir in France and was seen by many as symbolic of the harsh moral judgments of the time.

Aznavour, deeply moved, transformed this tragedy into a song that is both haunting and compassionate, a defense of love in all its complexity and a lament for lives torn apart by intolerance. His lyrics give voice to the silenced, expressing the suffering of forbidden love with immense tenderness and poetic power.

With a unique mix of spoken-word rhythms and poetic phrasing, Stromae turns everyday struggles into profound, beautifully crafted songs. Here I chose the haunting and mesmerizing song, L'enfer.

Zaho de Sagazan is a rising French singer-songwriter who blends pop, folk, and electronic sounds with evocative and poetic lyrics. Her haunting voice and introspective lyrics feel like reading pages of a personal diary. She explores themes of love, melancholy, and personal growth, often conveying raw emotion through her music. I discovered Zaho last year, and I was completely blown away. At the 39th Victoires de la Musique ceremony, she was rightfully acclaimed, winning awards for Best Original Song, Best Album, Best Stage Revelation, and Best Female Revelation.
Here is the eponymous single, La symphonie des éclairs, the title track which perfectly captures the essence of the album.
